Banning books is not something that I support. I find it extremely odd that content that isn't safe to read by adults at work is targeted at children.
Years ago a couple that I share a familial kinship with used to get into heated arguments about whether or not the husband was wrong for reading erotic fiction on the work commuter van. The erotic fiction that the husband was reading ran the spectrum from mild to extra spicy.
The wife thought that reading erotic fiction on the work van was pretty disgusting. She believed that whether or not other women said a word, he was potentially making women passengers uncomfortable and embarrassing her.
For his part, the husband argued that everyone in that van was an adult so he didn't see the big deal. Besides he argued, "I'm not even at work until I clock in. What I do up until that time is no one's business."
I chose not to weigh in but it was a rough time. The conversation was uncomfortable for me even though all of us were very much adults. We all had kids and bills in our name and everything.
So it occurred to me that in some cases we are debating about books and content that would not be considered "safe for work". Adults could lose their jobs, be reprimanded or accused of creating a hostile work environment.
As for the book that Robby is reading and some that I have seen like it, I could see an adult getting into some trouble at work. I personally have not had one job that would have been relaxed about me openly reading that particular content among co-workers who did not consent to hearing or reading about it.
I fail to see how a book that would be controversial in an adult workplace could be considered appropriate for children.
