I knew it.

This here, was earned.

About one year ago Lena Dunham began to write think-pieces around sexual violence. Lena Dunham.  The woman who wrote about taking sexual liberties with her younger sister in her popular memoir.  Major groups and organizations published her works.

Major groups and organizations published her works “expert” think pieces on sexual violence.

Well respected sexual assault organizations published her works.  Wait.  I have respected these organizations, excitedly attended their conferences, and volunteered with them.  These organizations that taught me a nice percentage of facts and information that I have learned about violence against men, women, and children gave Lena Dunham a platform to speak as an expert on sexual violence.

I was stunned.

Then…… I was heart broken.

Then…….I was furious.

I felt betrayed.

I wrote on one national organization’s Facebook page:

So who is being featured next week?  Bill Cosby? R Kelly? I mean….

It was not the first time that advocates had clashed with one another over Lena Dunham.

How We Gone Win?

If we are going to end sexual violence we must end sexual violence.  However, this is a self-inflicted wound.

Now when Birth of a Nation came out, most black women came together and shot it down.

Then, the general population made things uncomfortable for the Duggars.

The general population has not done that.

To be more clear, all women have not done that.

Until that happens, you make it acceptable for Bill Cosby to even think that he can go on a rape tour.  So, sure, you can get thinkpiece and protest his tour. But that isn’t enough.

Another “Bill Cosby” will come along way too soon.

This is How This Starts

See when Lena Dunham is given an expert platform.

When Donald Trump is elected president.

The Bill Cosby “rape tour” becomes a reality.

Bill Cosby is solely responsible for his own actions.  Still, much of sexual violence prevention and advocacy revolves around teaching people how their actions and behaviors have a significant impact on Survivors and sexual violence in general.  However, in this case, we have previously accepted people who have admitted to inappropriate sexual behavior taking high profile positions in our society.  We have allowed them to entertain us. We have allowed them to lead us.  This time it is Bill Cosby.

So, in this case, we have previously accepted people who have admitted to inappropriate sexual behavior.

We have even elected and awarded them with high profile positions in our society.

We have allowed them to entertain us.

We have allowed them to lead us.

This time, his name is Bill Cosby.

Survivor, Advocate, Black Woman

I don’t support Bill Cosby.

Bill Cosby was never “like a father” to me.

I’ve been watching Bill Cosby since every single episode of Fat Albert, reruns of I Spy, Uptown Saturday Night, Let’s Do It Again, and Bill Cosby Himself.

I didn’t see all of the seasons of The Cosby Show.  Because my mother had begun working in the antiviolence movement. She was hearing stories about the alleged victims very early on.  She believed them.

Here’s the thing:  We have three people who told us exactly what they did to other people: Donald Trump, Lena Dunham, and Bill Cosby.

If you only get in an uproar and act against Bill Cosby, ask yourself why?

Because it could be that one of them is a black male.

If people are playing these games we are not ever going to end sexual violence.

And yes, people are.  People are mixing racism, homophobia, classism, ableism, and every shade of hate, bias and discrimination you can think of in with their efforts to end sexual violence.  All of this is further complicating our efforts to end sexual violence in every community.

It is continuing to complicate efforts to end sexual violence in the black community.

In spite of all of this, I remain hopeful.

Sometimes, this is how we learn.
