Let Abused Women Heal: Males Have No Business in Women's Shelters

It is concerning and disheartening that there is so very little empathy for women and children in shelters. 

Women and children in distress. 

Women and children who have survived years of nightmares and still aren't sure whether they will survive their often male tormentor.  

A tormentor that they love. That's it.

So when I see posts around social media like the one posted by Amy Hamm (below), I wonder what kind of people can't see how any woman would not have reason to fear a male in a woman's shelter.  

Women Being Penalized for Truth-Telling

It is my understanding that there are people who think that Amy is the hateful one. The one who told the truth. The one who is standing up for women. Because all over the internet and all over the world women are being called "hateful" for standing up for women and children when we tell the truth.

Just consider that. When women expose the truth of abuse and violence that has happened to us we are told we are lying, it is too late for the truth, and we are just trying to bring someone down.

When we try to PREVENT violence against women and children we are told that we are lying, it is too early for the truth, and we are just trying to bring someone down. 

You can care about the needs of several different types of people at once. On this planet of 8 billion human beings who all exist, one must.

Safety in Women's Shelters 

These women and children who enter the shelter have already learned that males who claim to love them are capable of harming them. When these folks come into the shelter they are shell-shocked. These people have barely enjoyed the comfort of deep sleep. 

Having worked in a woman's shelter as a counselor, having a male so much as come to deliver the food puts people on edge.  Having a male reside in the shelter is a terrifying experience for the women, their children, & every full-time & part-time female worker. 

It isn't "hate" to prioritize your own female safety & well-being.  Female human beings require boundaries and safeguards to survive. 

The women who come to shelters are attempting to leave a violent and abusive partner.  WE as a society are so useless and thoroughly feckless that we can't even help and support them in doing that. 

(Sorry, this stuff makes me furious sometimes.)

Cease with being neglectful, unkind, and cold-hearted to vulnerable and abused women and children.
