Retailers Be Forewarned: Most People are Serious about Children. And People are Serious about That Bathing Suit Boundary

The company has lost billions since the rollout of Target's PRIDE collection and the subsequent boycott. Some recent estimates have noted upwards of 14 billion.

There have been many public relations versions asserting reasons for the boycott but fewer versions speaking directly to diverse groups of parents.

In one interview the CEO of Target did seem to get that the "tuck-friendly" swimsuits for children had gone too far.

Good. Because they did.

Whether it is a retailer, a designer, a coach, a family acquaintance, or a family member-everyone must abide by the Bathing Suit Rule.

For certain age groups, this is our "Stop, Drop and Roll".

It is a safety and prevention rule that has been embedded in us since childhood. It is second nature to us.

The Bathing Suit Rule is a standard recommendation for child safeguarding.

We know, and we teach to others, that no one ought to touch us in ways that make us feel uncomfortable in any area that our bathing suit covers during childhood. This includes doctors and medical professionals.

In general, the rule also suggests that adults and older children should avoid being alone with a child when they are partially or fully unclothed, and dress appropriately when in the presence of children.

The 'rule' is designed to reduce the risk of inappropriate behavior or allegations of misconduct.

It is important to note that the Bathing Suit Rule is not a legal requirement, but rather a best practice that is often recommended in child protection policies and guidelines.

It is not new and has been common practice and has been taught going back many decades now.

Certainly, an argument could be made that the suits are designed to give children more ownership over their own bodies.

However,

  • I think a concern was that the retailer wasn't asked to meet this alleged need,
  • parents were not consulted (a diverse cross-section of parents were not consulted, so here we go again),
  • this portion of the rollout was not handled with child safeguarding in mind

Target decided to try to shuffle in products designed for children's delicate private parts that should have been handled more sensitively with the rest of the other clothing items.

For parents that was a red flag.

Even in a television media segment where the issue was covered this past week, they showed colorful shirts on a dog and clothing for a male. I wish I could say otherwise but this was a leftist segment.

Parenting and caretaking is a different skill set.

At the very least, it requires love,
focus, attention to detail, sacrifice, hope, creativity, patience, a sense of humor and imagination ++++

Therefore, handling those who parent, caretaker and love children requires a different set of skills too.

The children are not paying for these items. The adults that are more adult-centered and trying to impress one another aren't paying for these products.

In the future, retailers may want to keep that in mind.
